The Bohemian Muslimah

I'm a Bohemian Muslimah. What does that mean exactly? To most people it probably sounds like conflicting terms, but it works out well for me and my life and I will tell you how.
Being a young Muslim woman doesn't mean I have to live a life consisting of nothing but prayer (salah), fasting, going to the masjid (mosque), reading Quran, and anything else practicing Muslims are supposed to do. You can enjoy life, it's just a matter of enjoying it within the limits of Islamic rules. Despite popular beliefs among many non-Muslims, Muslims are allowed to have fun and enjoy life....but, like I said, it's a matter of doing so within the limits of Islamic rules.
So, what does it mean to be a (modern) Bohemian? While the word Bohemian is used more loosley today than how it had originally come about, I'm a bohemian (in my opinion) because I choose to reject or go against societal norms...and, because of that, almost everyone considers me weird (or not normal). Well if being my own person means being weird, then I'm proud to be weird. It's better than trying to be like anyone else. So, anyhow, I reject most societal norms in the following ways:
  • I refuse to eat meat (I've been a vegetarian for a little over five years now), and I'm borderline vegan/raw foodist
  • I dislike most modern music (especially hip hop), the only modern music I'm really into is R&B. Most everything else I listen to is World music and old-school
  • I'm very spiritual, and into yoga and Eastern religion and philosophy
  • I'm "artsy" as some people describe me. Ever since I was young I've enjoyed writing fictional stories, and poetry (although, I'll admit, I've had bad writers block for the past couple of years)
  • I reject modern medecine. I will not take prescription and non-prescription medecine. I am more-so into natural healing/medecine
  • I am in love with nature and believe that we are all connected to nature and that we should respect it
Other things may include how I dress, how I view life itself, and a variety of other things.
It's obvious what makes me a Muslim...I believe Allah (God) is the only deity worthy of worship and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was Allah's final Messenger.
It's much easier than I previously thought to intertwine my intrests in with my religious beliefs without them conflicting with one another. Doing so has made my life much more beautiful, in my opinion, and enjoyable (to say the least). It is very much possible to be a practicing Muslim and a Bohemian at the same time. The things I (will) post in my blog will explain how.
